nayaaŋŋaq! welcome all!
Hi, I'm Cana Uluak Itchuaqiyaq (she/they). My name is pronounced KAY-nuh OOH-loke itch-AWE-key-yuck). I am an Iñupiaq from NW Alaska and an enrolled member of the Noorvik Native Community. Go Bears!

I'm an assistant professor of technical and scientific communication at Virginia Tech who focuses on empowerment, social justice, Indigenous advocacy, and equitable research practices. I am also the founding director of the Virginia Tech Center for Sustainable Engagement in the Arctic, CSEA. CSEA is the first Arctic research center in the commonwealth of Virginia and is the first ever university Arctic research center founded and led by an Inuk.

As a technical communication scholar and researcher, I combine my Arctic experiences and Inuit perspective with theory and data to develop effective methods that equip others in planning and conducting respectful research, teaching, organizational strategy, and advocacy work.

My skills include: communication design and outreach, advocacy, intercultural communication, science communication, strategic planning and programmatic development, grant and proposal writing, curriculum design and teaching, and publication design and editing. I also help humans get out of their own way when they are trying to help. :)
